We have all heard somebody say “I know a dog that is really mean ” or “the neighbours dog is very bad”, perhaps some of you have said it yourself? The real problem that follows such comments and attitudes is what happens to the dogs as a consequence of their perceived bad behaviour, and yes i’m talking about dogs being shouted at, or punished for something, worse still, after prolonged punishment many dogs are either dropped off to a refuge, abandoned on the street, and in other cases, euthanised. 

With more than 20 years of professional experience in the rehabitation and education of animals, I can tell you, with my hand on my heart, that there is no such thing as a bad dog, but rather the failure of humans to understand and communicate with them.

“He knows he did something wrong”

Many people assume that dogs understand when they have done something wrong, and are therfore believe they accountable for their actions.

“…My dog doesn’t speak french?”

Most people dont know how to communicate with a dog (or any other animal for that matter), and assume they understand when we talk to them. (or any other language, if you live abroad)

The good news is that these difficulties can be resolved with a little bit of patience and a willingness to learn.

Animals are no different. A puppy or adult dog for example, doesn’t understand our spoken language, social rules or behaviour. They have a complete set of their own –  this is a fundamental fact, which requires us to take up the responsability to help teach them to understand some simple rules of how we desire to live with them. The second problem 

So instead of scolding, punishing and essentially, setting them up for failure. Have a little patience, think about what you want and always put them for success, so that you can live together without stress, anger or frustration.
